Press Releases — Grenergy and CATL sign strategic agreement for the supply of 1.5 GWh for projects in Spain

May 21, 2026
- It includes 252 batteries for the stand-alone Oviedo plant (700 MWh) and the hybrid Escuderos plant (200 MW of solar capacity and 680 MWh of storage), Grenergy’s flagship storage projects in the country.
Madrid, 21 May 2026. Grenergy has signed an agreement with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL), a global leader in integrated battery technology and manufacturing solutions, for the supply of 1.5 GWh for the company’s flagship storage projects in Spain: Oviedo and Escuderos.
The agreement includes a total of 252 TENER S batteries. CATL’s TENER series features ultra-high-density containers based on LFP chemistry, designed to maximize efficiency and lifecycle performance in large-scale energy storage assets. Its compact architecture and intelligent management system enhance operational efficiency, reduce project footprint, and contribute to long-term grid reliability and stability.
Of the total, 108 batteries, equivalent to 700 MWh, will be allocated to the Oviedo project, considered the flagship initiative of Greenbox, Grenergy’s stand-alone battery platform in Europe.
The remaining 144 batteries, totaling 800 MWh, will be installed at Escuderos, where the company will replicate the hybridization model already deployed in its Oasis platforms in Chile
Grenergy and CATL had previously signed a strategic agreement for the supply of 1.25 GWh of batteries for Gabriela, Phase IV of the Oasis de Atacama project in Chile.
With this new transaction, Grenergy reinforces Spain’s role as one of its strategic markets for the coming years. The company will simultaneously deploy stand-alone storage projects and hybrid initiatives in the country, consolidating its position as a benchmark in Europe’s energy transition.
Oviedo: Greenbox’s flagship stand-alone battery project
Oviedo, considered Greenbox’s flagship project in Spain, will have a capacity of 700 MWh. The company expects the project to enter into operation in the first half of 2027. Grenergy has already signed a 10-year financial tolling agreement, a pioneering arrangement in the Spanish market, with an international utility rated Investment Grade by Moody’s.
With a total pipeline of more than 30 GWh in stand-alone batteries, Greenbox is consolidating its position as one of Europe’s leading storage platforms. To achieve this, the company is working across key markets where it already has a presence: Poland (5 GWh), Romania (7 GWh), Germany (3 GWh), Italy (5.8 GWh), Spain (6 GWh) and the United Kingdom (4 GWh).
Escuderos: Grenergy’s flagship hybrid project in Spain
Escuderos is Grenergy’s flagship hybrid project in Spain. The complex will include 200 MW of solar capacity and 680 MWh of storage. Construction of the BESS system will begin in the second half of this year, and commissioning is scheduled for 2027. The project already has a 12-year financial tolling agreement, which will come into effect in July 2028 for its batteries. It also has a daytime PPA signed with Galp in 2020, likewise for a 12-year term, for the solar portion of the plant.
With Escuderos, Grenergy aims to replicate in Spain the solar-storage hybrid model developed in Chile across its Oasis de Atacama and Oasis Central platforms, the origin of the company’s hybridization model.
According to David Ruiz de Andrés, CEO of Grenergy: “We are very proud to have a strategic partner like CATL to help us drive our flagship energy storage projects in Spain. After developing large-scale initiatives in Chile, we want to bring that expertise to Europe with assets in both stand-alone and hybrid projects that contribute to a safer, more flexible, cleaner and more competitive power system.”
