The Green Blog — We inaugurated Elena, the largest battery plant in the Americas

Grenergy — June 9, 2026
Yesterday, June 8, we reached a very important milestone for Grenergy: we inaugurated Elena, our most ambitious project to date and the largest battery plant in the Americas.
With 3.5 GWh already commissioned and set to expand to 7 GWh, Elena is much more than a plant. It is the result of months of work, engineering, complex logistics, and a team that rose to the challenge of the sun, the wind, and the desert to make it possible in just ten months.
Behind this achievement are 624 containers, 6,240 batteries, and, above all, the commitment of more than 400 people who worked to deliver this project with the ambition it deserved.
The ceremony was led by our CEO, David Ruiz de Andrés, and His Excellency the President of the Republic, José Antonio Kast Rist, and was attended by the Minister of Energy, Ximena Rincón; the Minister of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation, Ximena Lincolao; the Spanish Ambassador to Chile, Laura Oroz; the Mayor of María Elena, Viviana Cuello; as well as the communities that have supported us throughout this journey.
The start of the largest clean generation hub in Chile
The inauguration of Elena also reinforces our commitment to Chile. We have operated in the country since 2012 and, over time, it has become our main market, and we have become one of Grenergy’s three largest international investors.
We are one of the largest investors in Chile and, by 2028, we expect to reach cumulative investment of 5 billion dollars.
Elena is only the beginning: it marks the start of a new energy hub in northern Chile, designed to provide clean, competitive and flexible energy, and to strengthen the stability of the Chilean power system. With this, we move toward a system capable of delivering dispatchable energy 24/7, integrating more renewables, and accelerating the decarbonization of industry, mining and e-mobility.
GR Data: our digital infrastructure platform
Elena also represents a key step in our commitment to the digital future. Introduced in our latest investment plan update, it is the foundation of GR Data, our digital infrastructure platform.
Atacama Data is our most ambitious project: an AI training campus alongside the plant, with 400 MW IT scalable to 1 GW IT and secured grid connection, which will enable large-scale AI model training using renewable energy and with no water consumption.
This project is joined by the cloud campuses Polpaico Campus Norte and Alto Jahuel Campus Sur, which together will add 600 MW IT alongside the country’s main connectivity nodes.
With strategic locations, secured connections and competitive energy, we are consolidating our position as a key partner for hyperscalers and a relevant player in the development of the new digital infrastructure, helping turn Chile into an AI and data center hub for Latin America.
