Press Releases — Grenergy inaugurates Elena, the largest battery plant in the Americas, with the presence of President José Antonio Kast

Jun 9, 2026
- The company details its plan to boost data centers in Chile, capable of attracting up to US$ 25 billion in direct digital investment to Chile in the next 3 years.
- Grenergy, one of the 3 largest international investors in the country, is promoting the largest clean generation hub in northern Chile, whose first major milestone is Elena.
María Elena, Antofagasta, June 8, 2026. Grenergy today inaugurated Elena, the largest battery plant in the Americas, in a ceremony led by His Excellency the President of the Republic, José Antonio Kast Rist, and attended by the Minister of Energy, Ximena Rincón; the Minister of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation, Ximena Lincolao; the Ambassador of Spain in Chile, Laura Oroz and the Mayor of María Elena. Viviana Cuello, among other authorities.
Grenergy, one of the 3 largest international investors in the country
Elena’s inauguration reinforces Grenergy’s commitment to Chile, where it has been operating since 2012 and has established itself as one of the 3 largest international investors in the country. The company has invested 2,800 million dollars in the country, its main market, and plans to add another 2,000 million in the next two years, reaching a cumulative investment of 4,800 million.
Elena, the largest battery plant in the Americas
Elena, with 3.5 GWh of storage already commissioned, is the largest battery plant in the Americas. The company has announced in its roadmap until 2028 its expansion to 7 GWh.
It is Grenergy’s most ambitious project to date and already has 624 containers and 6,240 batteries. Its construction mobilized more than 400 workers, boosting the local economy and strengthening the link with the community through educational and social initiatives in María Elena.
Elena is part of the Oasis de Atacama platform, which integrates 2.5 GW of solar and 14.1 GWh of storage and is the origin of the hybridization model that Grenergy is replicating in central Chile with Oasis Central (1.4 GW solar and 5.1 GWh of storage) and exporting to Spain. Together, the OASIS platforms reach 5 GW of solar and 22 GWh of storage.

Elena, the start of the largest clean generation hub in the north of the country
From Elena, Grenergy is promoting the largest energy hub in northern Chile. With 2.1 GW of solar and 14 GWh of storage, this development delivers 24/7 manageable energy, bolsters security of supply and provides the flexibility the grid needs to integrate more renewables and cope with peak demand and extreme weather events.
This infrastructure is key to accelerating the electrification of industry, the decarbonization of mining and the advancement of electromobility, reducing dependence on volatile fuels and ensuring cleaner, more stable and competitive energy. In addition, it lays the foundations to attract digital infrastructure and turn Chile into an AI and data center hub for Latin America.
GR Data: a platform that could attract up to US$ 25,000 million in direct digital investment to Chile in the next 3 years
Grenergy, supported by its ability to generate clean and competitive energy, presented new details of GR Data, its data center platform in Chile. The platform, with a pipeline of 1GW IT, could attract up to US$ 25,000 million in direct digital investment to Chile in the next 3 years.
The first development will be Atacama Data, an AI training campus near Elena, which will start with 400 MW IT, scalable to 1 GW IT, and with a guaranteed connection in Kimal. It will allow large-scale AI models to be trained using renewable energy and without water consumption. In addition to this project, the Polpaico Campus Norte and Alto Jahuel Campus Sur cloud campuses will contribute 600 MW IT together with the main connectivity nodes in the country.
With strategic locations, guaranteed connections and competitive energy, Grenergy consolidates itself as a key partner for hyperscalers and as a driver of Chile’s new digital infrastructure. The country combines clean energy with privileged international connectivity—including low-latency submarine cables—which opens the door to attracting frontier technology, raising productivity, and moving towards an economy that also exports technology, knowledge, and innovation.
David Ruiz de Andrés, CEO of Grenergy, at the opening ceremony: “Today we are one of the top 3 international investors in Chile. With Elena, the largest battery plant in the Americas, we are promoting a hub in the north based on clean and competitive energy for the industry and for all Chileans. This hub will be the basis of Atacama Data, the data center that we developed in the north within our GR Data platform, with which we seek to attract close to US$ 25,000 million in direct digital investment to Chile in the next 3 years.“
